Today I spent the bulk of my day sitting in a place where people are at the end of their lives. Some are still fighting while others are just waiting for the last breath of life to leave their bodies. I came across a gentleman who has been given days to live, and who was sitting in a room all by himself, reading a book. He looked so peaceful. He had a smile on his face and looked like he didn't have a care in the world. If I had to guess, he was in his mid 70's. He saw me passing by his door and we made eye contact. At that moment he put his book down and asked me to come into the room. I almost said no but something pulled me towards him.
When I walked into the room, this gentleman asked me to please pass him a bottle of soda he had next to his bed. He pointed at the bottle, smiled and said, "I spent my whole life avoiding this thing because people told me it would kill me. Now I can drink as much as I want because something else is going to kill me first." He laughed so hard at his own joke that I couldn't help but laugh with him. He did say he would love to have a cigar but that is one thing they won't let him do. I wanted so badly to sneak him one at that moment.
He then asked me a question. What do you do for a living? I told him I'm a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. He asked to see my business card which I handed him. He then asked me to explain to him what I mean by, "I'm a Realtor with Coldwell Banker." I went through the usual definition. "I'm a licensed professional with the most recognized real estate brand in the world, Coldwell Banker. I help solve people's real estate issues by bringing sellers and buyers together to..." Before I could finish the elevator pitch, he motioned with his hand and stopped me. He then said he just wants someone other than nurses to talk to.
We spoke for a couple of hours. We laughed a lot and spoke about both our pasts. He told me about his marriages, his divorces, and the fact that he never had children. He said that was his biggest regret. We even spoke about the book he was reading, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (one of my favorite classics). He then said that my career has more to do with the story behind the why than it does with the textbook definition of the position. He said that New York is overstaffed with Professional Real Estate Salespeople, but that it only has ONE of me, and that George L. Rosario's story is what would make him choose me over the other 100 agents that might knock on his door. With his guidance, this is what we came up with. This is my story of what I really do and why I do it.
When I was in 6th grade, my English teacher told me that I had an incredible ability to tell stories about the things I see in the world. She would ask me to write stories, 2 or 3 paragraphs long about things around me, and then she would read these stories in front of the class. This inspired me and I've continued looking for the story behind everything I see and experience. So what do I do for a living? I help create wonderful stories while solving people's problems and meeting their real estate needs. I develop and share stories about people, homes and neighborhoods and find others who want to hear those stories. I help people start a new chapter in the story of their lives. I don't just tell stories about doors, windows, walls, floors, foundations, prices and deeds. I tell stories about experiences, dinners, holidays, community events, memories, details, people, family, goals, life, environment, past, present, future and more. I'm a story teller. Selling homes is a byproduct of this. I'm a Realtor.
My story is different than yours, but that is what makes our industry so incredible. We are not working in a cookie cutter industry. I think that defining yourself by the textbook definition of the word Realtor limits you. Just like there are no two listings that are exactly alike, neither are there two Realtors with the same exact story. So I would suggest that you look for the story behind what you do and why you do it. Be your own unique definition of the word Realtor.
By the way, this gentleman described himself as a creator of smiles, laughs, ideas, memories, crowd winners and tearjerkers. He spent his entire career as a professional speech writer. He said he wrote for graduations, weddings, political campaigns, winners of awards, business presentations, religious leaders, professional speakers and up and coming ones, etc. The hardest speech he ever wrote, and the only one he ever presented himself, was the obituary he read at his mother's funeral 33 years ago. Although he loved his career, he admits he should have confronted his fear of public speaking so that he could have publicly told his mother how much he loved her before she died. This was the only time in our conversation where he choked up and let out a couple of tears. I cried at that moment a lot more than he did. It was also the last thing he said about his own career.
